In a well attended concert The Ben Webster Prize was celebrated at ’Krudttønden’ (The Gunpowder Barrell) where we have been before. The brilliant but until now not so well-known guitarist UFFE STEEN who mainly perform his magic in Jutland and Fyen gave a happy and inspired concert with Henrik Gunde, piano, Lennart Ginman, bas and Jeppe Gram, drums. Broad smiles all over.
Frank Büchman-Møller, author, jazz archivist and member of the board, motivated the choice in a speech where he hailed Steen for not repeating himself, always inspired and in full control of his instrument. (look up Uffe Steen on Youtube and get a taste).
The Special Honorary Prize was given to trombonist and arranger Vincent Nilsson who has spread his great tone and phrasing in Denmarks Radio Big Band for more than 40 years – lately with his great CD ‘Spirituals’. He was accompanied with former Prize-winners Ole Kock Hansen, Bo Stief and Alex Riel… plus his trombone partner Steen Hansen in some smashing duets.
Henrik Bolberg performed ‘Squeeze me” in a  Flugelhorn-salute  of  the Foundations honorary member Clark Terry who departed last month, 94 years old and a dear friend of Webster.
All the music had a special quality, performed by the best of the best.
For a closer the two prize-winners joined in a ‘Blues for Webster’.
This was the 39’tre time the Ben Webster Prize was celebrated. A day short of the tenor masters birthday.
